This week sure has been an eventful one. From riots in LA, the Mexican President calling for people to stand against Trump, a US senator forcibly removed from a press conference and handcuffed, a full moon, Israel and Iran getting into it, Friday the 13th, and yet we are just getting started. Even with all of that chaos, it seems like the biggest talking points are all about what’s going on this Saturday. So, why not join in – let’s get into it!
Saturday, June 14, 2025 looks like it is set to be a pretty big day. In Washington DC, there will be a military parade to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States Army and Flag Day. While the day these fall on coincide with Trump’s 79th birthday, he has stated that the parade is to celebrate the occasions and not his birthday. This parade comes 8 years after he was dazzled by a military parade in France, which he hoped to top one day. This week Trump said, about this parade, “I think it’s going to be great, we’re going to celebrate our country for a change.” Lee Greenwood, the artist behind the song “God Bless the U.S.A.” also will be performing.
At the same time, however, in many cities across the country (with the exception of DC), people who oppose Trump are going to be protesting against him. The “No Kings” protests’ goal seems to be to distract people from the celebration, and will be, according to organizers of the event, a “nationwide day of defiance” to “reject authoritarianism,” and “send a strong message to leaders and institutions who are considering right now whether to capitulate or whether to fight back, and to send a message that this period we are in right now, this period of authoritarian breakthrough, is temporary. And democracy will reassert itself.” The website states “We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.”
“I don’t feel like a king. I have to go through hell to get stuff approved.” Trump replied when asked about the protests. “A king would say ‘I’m not going to get this…he wouldn’t have to call up [House Speaker] Mike Johnson and [Senate Majority Leader John] Thune and say, ‘Fellas you’ve got to pull this off’ and after years we get it done. No no, we’re not a king, we’re not a king at all.”
The goal of the protests is to reject authoritarianism, while the goal of the parade is to celebrate the US military and flag, and what they represent.
According to a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 6 in 10 Americans say that Saturday’s parade is “not a good use” of government money, including the vast majority of people, 78%, who neither approve nor disapprove of the parade overall. However, the survey found that US adults are more likely to approve of the parade – about 4 in 10 “somewhat” or “strongly” approve of the parade, while about 3 in 10 “somewhat” or “strongly” disapprove. About 3 in 10 neither approve nor disapprove.
